This is Johanna and her little brother.
The bronze statue is made by Svein Magnus Håvarstein.
It has been one of my favourites for many years.
It was given to the city, by Stavanger Aftenblad, our biggest local newspaper back in 1993.
"Johanna og Broremann" and the story by Ajax is well known for families from our area.

I also like the NUART version on the mural /wall by Ernest Zacharevic.

What a lovely sunny day!

This couple ANTON and MARGARETH from the Netherlands were passengers on one of the cruise ships that visited our city today.
They had been visiting Stavanger 10 years ago, and thought it had changed. Difficult for me to say what has changed, but this time they had no rain, so that was good.
They will continue the cruise to Kristiansand and Oslo before heading back home via a few more stops.
Home is "Sweet lake city,"as  ZOETERMEER is called, and it is situated half way between The Hague and Rotterdam.

Why do all Dutch people speak English so well?
I don't know.

Today you can see " Children with birds" at Storhaug.

Orange scarves.

The statue of Arne Garborg in the city park has got an orange coloured scarf. Lots of people around the country have been knitting ORANGE scarves.

Statue by Hugo Frank Wathne.

Stavanger would not have developed to the extent it did during the industrial period, if it wasn't for all the women who worked very long days in the industry.
In the beginning they did not have permanent jobs and they worked very hard, sometimes even bringing their children to work.
Later as laws and regulations were introduced, things became better.

This is a fine example of one of the many workers who made Stavanger famous, in this case, working in the canning industry.

The statue is made by Hugo Frank Wathne, and is placed at what we call,
 Østre Bydel (East part of the town).

Stavanger,- the oil capital.

I have just watched the news, and I saw an image similar to this....
Perhaps the camera people where there at the same time as I passed and also looked at the big supply boats along the harbour?

The news was about the effect that the oil industry has had on Stavanger (the oil capital) and Norway in general. I guess some people were right, we would probably managed with less money, less clothes, fewer holidays and perhaps only one car and not thrown away so much food etc.

Our country changed 50 years ago........when we found the oil.

These days safe jobs in the oil industry are not so safe anymore.

Obstfelder.

It looked like the famous Obstfelder kept an eye on what was happening around him/the statue today.

Afternoon in Stavanger.

A guided tour.

The man in the read anorak was busy talking in a language I did not understand, but I guess he was a guide telling a group of tourists about our city. They were standing in front of the statue of Alexander Kielland, a famous author, who has been standing here for many years, facing the harbor and the once lively marketplace (the marketplace has been much less active over the last few years).

Quiet in town.

In Norway the presents were opened yesterday evening (and after that, Father Christmas went to England.... we were told as children).

Stavanger is very very quiet.......

The statue is one of my favorites in Stavanger. and is in the beginning of the narrow little road Nygaten.

"The shrimp" as the statue is called, - seen from a window one evening.

A quiet morning at Vågen, near the fish  market, which you can see in front of the big office building.


From time to time the water goes over the edge, so we have a small flood that can sometimes end up inside some of the old buildings along the harbor.

Rain and quite windy today.
I am off to the cinema soon to see " Les Miserables"!:)
