It is strange, isn´t it?
Perhaps some old electrical cables were once attached to the side of the tree and the tree grew into them?

I would think you're right- nature just grows over something like that.
Nature rules over humans, it just takes time. Interesting find, I wonder how long they have been embedded in the tree.
