I was curious, this is a very nice picture!
Some boats, usually ferries or cruise ships, have propellers on the sides, and the eventual tug has to be careful about that so they have designed spots to push. The small door at that level is used by pilots.
Again, an original composition from something very familiar.
I will have to contemplate this question for awhile...
